Some Good Reasons to Love Apples

March 12, 2014

“An apple a day keeps the doctor away” may be an old adage, but we now know that this is no myth! In fact according to a USDA’s study in 2004, apples may very well be a superfood as they can reduce your chance of getting Alzheimers. A recent study showed that mice that drank apple juice daily had a reduced chance of developing the disease and showed less effects of aging on their brains.

Apples can reduce your risk of developing certain forms cancer by up to 23%. Research shows that the flavonols found in apples contain several compounds that have powerful anti-growth effects on cancerous cells. These compounds are found in the apple skin- so no peeling! As well, apples are rich in anti-oxidants and fibre. The US National Cancer Institute recommends a diet high in such compounds to reduce the risk of developing colorectal cancer.

Apples can reduce your risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. Women who eat one apple a day are 28% less likely to develop Type 2 diabetes according to a recent study.

Apples can reduce your cholesterol and help give you a healthier heart. Again, this is due to the apple’s soluble fibre content. The added benefit is also a lower weight.

Apples can improve your health. One of the antioxidants found in red apples is called quercetin. Recent studies found quercetin significantly aids in fortifying and boosting your immune system.

Apples can also help detoxify your liver, prevent cataracts and even give you whiter teeth! So perhaps the old adage of “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” is in fact not an adage, but the truth.
