The link between Facebook and eating disorders

There have been countless stories in the news and studies done in regards to how Facebook affects us. It's acknowledged by many that visiting Facebook can make us feel less satisfied with our own lives, as we are bombarded with the "fabulous lives" of our friends.

In addition to life dissatisfaction, researchers have found that Facebook usage is linked to eating disorders. Psychologists at Florida State University surveyed 960 college women and found that more time spent on Facebook was associated with higher levels of disordered eating. Those who browsed the social network for just 20 minutes reported more body dissatisfaction than those who used the Internet to research rainforest animals.

Women who placed greater importance on receiving "likes" on status updates and those who were more likely to un-tag themselves in photos and compare their own photos with friends' photos reported the highest levels of disordered eating.
